Hawaii fan palms fan out to Bay Area

Hawaii's only native palm tree, the loulu, is making a comeback of sorts
-- some 40,000 years after it's thought to have arrived in the islands.

Polynesians helped cultivate the fan palm (the loulu's English name), of
which 19 to 23 species (depending on whom you believe) are endemic to the
islands. They used its blades for thatching, ate its seeds and made its
wood into spears. In the 19th century, they began plaiting its blades into
hats.
