The Jepson Herbarium Public Program presents:
Flora, Geology, and Paleontology of the South Diablo Range, March 27
– 30, 2008
with instructor Julie Anne Hopkins and guest instructors Hilde
Schwartz, James Weigand, and Ed Mercurio
Location: Monocline Ridge, Tumey Hills, and Panoche Hills
The southern portion of the Diablo Range (California's
Coast Ranges) hosts incredibly diverse geology, soil composition, and
a wide-ranging elevation gradient (200 – 5,000ft), thus the flora of
this region boasts a number of rare and endemic plants. With much of
the acreage of the Southern Diablo range either privately owned or
popular for off-road vehicle use on portions of public lands, the
region has been the subject of land management and wildlife
conservation attention. This workshop will introduce the unique
vegetation, geology, and land use issues of the arid Tumey Hills,
Panoche Hills, and Monocline Ridge, as well as the identification of
rare and common plants. Expect a desert-like experience when we
observe northern extensions of several Mojave plant species as we
hike in the Monvero Dunes on the Monocline Ridge. If time and weather
permit a trip to the New Idria serpentine area will be included.
Course fee ($450/$475) includes campground fees, meals,
and transportation for the duration of the workshop. Camping is at
Mercey Hot Springs, a developed campground with flush toilets and
running water. For more information or to register for this
workshop, please visit the Jepson Herbarium Public Programs website
