[PCA] NEWS: Genetically modified plants vacuum up toxins

I think the theory is that tons of water is filtered by pounds
of trees, which are then easier to deal with because there's
less mass. At least, that's the theory. However, that smaller
mass of contaminated trees may be no easier to deal with than
(e.g.) the contaminated water. For example, shorelines in
Puget Sound continually accumulate many hundreds of tons of
toxic creosoted wood that washes up. This is being periodically
"cleaned up," at least in places. The material is then hauled
off to the hazardous waste landfill in eastern Oregon. Actual
neutralization of the creosote is not occurring. Rather, the
problem is simply being transfered elsewhere (albeit, in this
example, a better location from the standpoint of
environmental and public health threats). Accumulation or
concentration of toxic substances is merely a first step
towards neutralization.
