Fall 2008 - 2009 (Tentative), Preliminary Call for Entries

Losing Paradise? Endangered Plant Species Here and Around the World

To increase public awareness of plants that are threatened with extinction
here and around the world, the ASBA is in the early planning stages of
assembling a traveling exhibition of artworks featuring endangered plants.
This juried exhibition will include approximately 45 original artworks in
three framed sizes: 24" X 18", 30" X 24" and 40"X 34". Paradise Lost?
promises to be an exciting project that will build relationships between
artists, institutions, conservation organizations, scientists and
horticulturists.

ASBA is giving you plenty of lead time to cultivate the resources needed
to locate these plants, either in botanical gardens, or in protected or
unprotected habitat. Many of you already know plants that are protected in
your area, or you may be interested in plants that are internationally
protected. Be aware of other artists in your area who may be working on
the same plant you are - it may be necessary for you to choose plants that
occur outside your geographical area. Some internationally protected
plants can be found in botanical gardens. We can't stress enough the
ethics of proper procedures if painting these plants in the wild. They
must be studied in the wild and they and their habitats must be left
exactly as they are found. It is strongly suggested that you become
affiliated with local scientists, conservation organizations, botanical
gardens, etc. that can provide guidance in locating and studying the
plants whether they be in public collections or in the wild.
