MARYLAND NATIVE PLANT SOCIETY Annual Conference
October 14-15, 2006
Botanical Diversity of Montgomery County - The Geology-Botany Connection
The Universities at Shady Grove, Rockville, MD

This conference will explore the varied geological terrains of Montgomery County and their natural communities. Despite intense suburban development, Montgomery County has a rich diversity of protected natural areas. For example, the schist and gneiss of the Potomac Gorge, the diabase at Hoyles Mill, and the serpentine area near Rockville each support a different type of flora. Talks and field trips will elucidate these connections.

Speakers on Saturday morning.
Tony Fleming: Geology of the Potomac River Fall Zone, from Great Falls to D.C.
Gary P. Fleming: Vegetation Ecology of the Potomac Gorge
John Parrish: Botanical Bounty: How Geology, Climate, and Setting Support Montgomery County's Rich Botanical Diversity

Field trips to choose from on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning with expert leaders knowledgeable about local plant communities.
Evening social (optional) on Saturday evening.

Cost: $50 (members), $65 (non-members); Dinner Social $30/person.
