RANCHO SANTA ANA BOTANIC GARDEN

Position Title: Gardener II.
Date Revised: June 25, 2001.

Reports to: Grounds Manager.

Basic Function:
Under direct supervision, maintains the living plant collection including
planting, pruning, weeding, watering, and removing dead plants; maintains
irrigation systems, decomposed granite paths and other garden facilities;
works with interns and volunteers.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Accomplishes gardening tasks for the care and maintenance of the Rancho
Santa Ana Botanic Garden's living collection under the supervision of
Gardener I, Lead Gardener, Horticulturist, or Grounds Manager.

2. Cleans up and removes garden debris (including dead-heading of spent
flowers and human generated litter) as necessary and as directed.

3. Controls weeds and pests as directed.

4. Applies pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals following all
federal and state laws, regulations and safety policies as instructed and
as directed.

5. Humanely traps and humanely terminates rabbits, ground squirrels, roof
rats, wood rats, bullfrogs, and other garden pests as directed.

6. Plants, mulches, and prepares and conditions soil as directed.

7. Installs, maintains and operates irrigation systems as necessary or as
directed and/or approved.

8. Repairs hoses, hose bibs and irrigation stands as necessary.

9. Provides supplementary watering by hand as necessary or as directed.

10. Uses hand tools effectively.

11. Provides spot repairs of decomposed granite and asphalt paths.

12. Operates most power equipment safely and effectively (brush chipper,
string trimmer, blowers, etc.) and provides operator servicing (filling
and checking oil, gas, water, etc.) for same.

13. Reports servicing needs, equipment malfunctions, breakdowns, etc. to
the Grounds Manager and/or to the Director of Maintenance in a timely
manner.

14. Removes dead or damaged wood as directed. Pruning to shape or direct
growth of shrubs and trees is to take place under supervision.

15. Plants, cages, cultivates and collects seed of the Garden's annual
wildflower displays.

16. Assists in field work as directed and in seed cleaning and processing
as directed.

17. Works with Garden volunteers and interns as directed.

18. Assists with other appropriate aspects of Horticulture Department and
Garden operations as required.


Within six months of employment must learn and understand:
1. The Garden's plant records system of labels, signs, planting cards, and
maps.


Additional desirable functions:
1. Operates heavy duty equipment (chain saw, tractor, etc.).


Qualifications:
Demonstrated strong interest in Californian native plants and some
professional gardening experience.

1. Must possess knowledge and demonstrated skills in basic horticultural
practices.

2. Must be able to maneuver in narrow or confined places around fragile
plants.

3. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds for 100 yards.

4. Must take direction well from supervisor.

5. Must work well with others and must be attentive to work.

6. Must be a legal resident of the U.S. and have a valid California
Driver's License.

7. Must possess or obtain a California Red Cross First Aid Certificate.


Additional desirable qualification:
1. California Qualified Pesticide Applicator's Certificate.
