Position Title:  Assistant Nursery Manager
Position Start Date:  September 2004
Reports to:  Nursery Manager

Basic Function:
Performs various technical aspects of nursery work including the
propagation, care, and maintenance of nursery plant collections. Assists
with the management of the nursery, including the supervision and training
of nursery staff, interns, and volunteers. The Assistant Nursery Manager
is responsible for managing the nursery (plants, facilities, staff) in
Nursery Managers' absence. This is a 30 to 40 hour a week position with
competitive salary and a generous benefit package.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Performs nursery work (labeling, transplanting, watering, mixing soil,
pruning, weeding, raking, removal of dead plants, etc.). Propagates
nursery plant collections as needed or directed.

2. Coordinates and assists in volunteer projects including: planning,
preparation, record keeping, and cleanup. In the absence of Nursery
Manager, supervises all aspects of volunteer projects.

3. Maintains plant records using card files and computer based systems.

4. Assists with the supervision and training of nursery personnel,
interns, and volunteers.

5. Responsible for the nursery care and maintenance, including watering on
at least one weekend day each week.

6. Accomplishes or assists with ongoing nursery inventory.

7. Applies insecticides, fungicides, fertilizers, and other products as
needed or directed by Nursery Manager. Participates in developing and
maintaining an integrated pest management program for the nursery. Traps
vertebrate pests as needed or directed.

8. Coordinates and assists with special Nursery projects as directed.

9. Assists with all aspects of the Garden's fall and spring plant sales
(planning, set up, labeling, signage, etc.).

10. Assists with other aspects of Horticulture and Garden operations as
assigned.


Qualifications:

Minimum of AA degree in horticulture or related field and/or demonstrated
appropriate work experience. Previous experience with California Native
plants and/or nursery work required. State of California Qualified
Applicator Certificate is required within one year of employment. Must
possess or obtain an American Red Cross First Aid Certificate. Competency
with Windows applications, spreadsheets, and keyboard operations of
computers essential, familiarity with BG Base desirable.  Must be willing
and able to work outdoors year round. Ability to maneuver in narrow
(18"-24") path spaces required. Physical strength sufficient to safely
lift and carry bags of soil components (50-60 lbs.) necessary. Must follow
instructions, work successfully with others, and independently with
minimal supervision. Must be a legal resident of the U.S. and have a valid
California Drivers License.
