[PCA] Announcement for Applicants for the 2004 Catherine H. Beattie F ellowship

This is a fellowship to support graduate work on the rare plants of the
Southeastern States.  The fellowship is supported by the Garden Club of
America honoring Catherine H Beattie's significant contributions to the
Garden Club of America.  It is administered in part by the Center for Plant
Conservation.

The stipend is $1,000-$4,000 depending on earnings of the supporting funds.
Last year there was one full and one partial award, although usually one
award is given.  Compensation is for work done by a graduate student, often
at a
botanical garden jointly serving CPC's conservation program as well as the
student's curricular studies.

Each year, the grant enables a graduate student in biology, horticulture or
a related field to conduct research on a rare or endangered U.S. plant.
Preference is given to students focusing on the endangered flora of the
Carolinas or the SE United States.

Applications should be submitted to the Center for Plant Conservation. They
should include the following:

*       a 2-3 page proposal, which includes a description of the research
project, and how it relates to the student's academic and professional
development
*       an itemized budget for the funds requested
*       a current resume
*       a letter of endorsement by an academic advisor from the institution
where the student is pursuing graduate studies
*       the names of three additional persons qualified to describe the
student's character and ability
*       official transcripts for both undergraduate and graduate academic
records

The successful applicant should be prepared to write an article for Plant
Conservation, the newsletter of the Center for Plant Conservation, and
submit a written report of the project results. Selection will be based on
the excellence of the student's personal and academic qualifications, and on
the anticipated contribution of the project to the conservation of rare and
endangered plants.

*       Completed applications must be received by CPC no later than
December 31, 2003.
*       The Fellowship recipient will be notified by March 31, 2004.
*       The final report is due to CPC by March 31, 2005.
