<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">This is a fellowship to support graduate work on the rare plants of the</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">Southeastern States. The fellowship is supported by the Garden Club of</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">America honoring Catherine H Beattie's significant contributions to the Garden Club of America. It is administered in part by the Center for Plant Conservation.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">The stipend is $1,000-$4,000 depending on earnings of the supporting funds.</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">Last year there was one full and one partial award, although usually one award is given. Compensation is for work done by a graduate student, often at a</FONT></P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">botanical garden jointly serving CPC's conservation program as well as the</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">student's curricular studies.</FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">Each year, the grant enables a graduate student in biology, horticulture or</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">a related field to conduct research on a rare or endangered U.S. plant.</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">Preference is given to students focusing on the endangered flora of the</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">Carolinas or the SE United States.</FONT>

<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">* a 2-3 page proposal, which includes a description of the research</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">project, and how it relates to the student's academic and professional</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">development</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">* an itemized budget for the funds requested</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">* a current resume</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">* a letter of endorsement by an academic advisor from the institution</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">where the student is pursuing graduate studies</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">* the names of three additional persons qualified to describe the</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">student's character and ability</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">* official transcripts for both undergraduate and graduate academic</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">records</FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">The successful applicant should be prepared to write an article for Plant</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">Conservation, the newsletter of the Center for Plant Conservation, and</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">submit a written report of the project results. Selection will be based on</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">the excellence of the student's personal and academic qualifications, and on</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">the anticipated contribution of the project to the conservation of rare and</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">endangered plants.</FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">Application Deadlines</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">* Completed applications must be received by CPC no later than</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">December 31, 2003.</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">* The Fellowship recipient will be notified by March 31, 2004.</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Courier New">* The final report is due to CPC by March 31, 2005.</FONT>
