Like I said, I've been out of this arena for a few years (guess it's
about 2005 now, lol)

Looks like research is suggesting a correlation between genetics and
chemical activity.

The relationship between genetic and chemotypic diversity in American

/The close correspondence between chemotype and genetic cluster provides
the first DNA-based evidence for the genetic basis of ginsenoside
composition/

Ginsenoside content and variation among and within American
ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) populations

/Chemotype did not vary by production type (wild versus cultivated) and
roots within a population rarely exhibited chemotypes different from the
overall population chemotype. These results provide support for recent
evidence that relative Rg1 to Re ginsenoside contents in American
ginseng roots vary by region and that these differences are likely
influenced more by genotype than environmental factors/

A great argument for growers to use local seed.

Curious how the longer growing time of wild relates to ginsenocides (I
thought some occurred only after 5 years, while industrially grown roots
are grown shorter times than wild sim or wild) but regardless, it's a
good excuse to encourage growers and push FWS to work on sustainable
seed supply.
