Pollinator Symposium
Wednesday, October 18, 2006 8 AM to 12 noon / continuing 1:00 to 3:30 PM
USDA Jefferson Auditorium
(14th and Independence Avenue SW, Smithsonian station on the Blue/Orange
line)

Hosted by the USDA Forest Service, USDA Natural Resources Conservation
Service,
the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign (NAPPC),
The Wallace Genetic Fund, and the Packard Foundation

WHAT: A one day symposium for agricultural interests; policy makers;
Congressional and Embassy representatives;
public and private land management; foundations; conservation
organizations; natural resource
professionals, mining and utility management; gardening, landscaping and
botanic garden interests; golf,
recreation and hunting interests; environmentally engaged religious and
corporate organizations; industry;
builders, planners, construction and those interested in sustainable
development.

The informative agenda
includes:
§ The Importance of Pollinators – Where Flora and Fauna Meet
§ Threats to Pollinator Populations – Food and Forest Security
§ A Global Effort - International Collaborations and North America’s
Interests
§ Managing Resources – Partnering with Agriculture, Forestry,
Corporations
§ Public Interest and Support – People, Plants and Pollinators

WHY: Pollinators are critical to human survival. The interactions between
animal pollinators (bees, birds,
bats, butterflies, beetles and flies) and flowering plants - essential to
the human food chain as well as terrestrial
ecosystems - are showing signs of peril. Highlighting the need for
attention to pollinators is the National
Academy of Sciences NRC Study on the Status of the Pollinators of North
America, which will be reviewed.

The symposium will impart background science, policy, sustainable
agriculture, and practical
conservation action.

HIGHLIGHTS: Appearances by Dr. May Berenbaum, Chair NAS NRC Pollinator
Panel; Secretary of
Agriculture Mike Johanns (invited but not confirmed), Dr. Gabriela
Chavarria; and US Department of Interior
officials and a SPECIAL UNVEILING of the U.S. Postal Service Pollination
Stamp Series.

§ Pre-registration required. Government issued photo ID required for
entry.
