Dear friends,

I want to know if Cannabis sativus has any pharmaceutical or recognized medicinal use. It is prescribed for some ailments in ethnomedicine but that will not help.

There is an area in my state of Himachal Pradesh in India, where Cannabis is cultivated since ages. People use its fibre for making ropes and also a special kind of footwear. The seeds are roasted and eaten. Of course, they also make Marijuana from the leaves.

It looks that the climate of this area is highly conducive for the synthesis of the active marijuana ingredient as the they say the marijuana from this area is of exceptionally high quality. So it has started attracting drug addicts from various parts of the world who come here and spend a few months only to enjoy the puff. Some illegal trading is also taking place.

I want to know if this plant can be put to any industrial use.

I am a horticulturist and not a chemist. So please tell me layman's language.

Very truly yours,
