[MPWG] Re: Poachers endanger Kentucky's ginseng

This article provides an opportunity to point out that, indeed, there are
harvesters who are truly dedicated to stewarding the resource, and, despite
their good efforts, it takes only one or two unscrupulous folks who
knowingly ruin it for everyone.

Moreover, perhaps not in the case of ginseng, it's quite possible that some
poaching can be attributed to unfamiliarity with the law - in fact, no
wild-harvest is allowed on the Park Service land.

I find it useful to know what the general public is reading/watching about
medicinal plants. From a policy point of view, it’s almost as important as
the science. If you feel that the article was propaganda, you may state
so, as you did. It would be helpful the hear more from you about what
interests you believe are doing the propagandizing and what the major
misstatements are. For myself, I’d like to see things like this continue
to be posted. The people on this list all have a knowledge base that they
can use to evaluate these pieces, with or without the assistance of your
critiques.

I find it very disappointing that poorly written/poorly researched
newspaper articles repeatedly get reposted on important lists such as the
Medicinal Plant Working Group, a place where we need to be having
discussions based on rigorous science and dependable observation. Such
repostings do little but spread misinformation and fear and make it harder
for those harvesters that are truly dedicated to stewarding the resource.
Can we not have a higher standard and dispense with the propoganda?
