Below is the updated information on MSU's Third Medicinal and Aromatic
Plants Symposium - coming in two weeks. The Symposium is sponsored by a
grant administered through the USDA to Mountain State University. As
always, the focus will be on native plants of Appalachia and the slate of
speakers this year is impressive: with Mark Blumenthal (American Botanical
Council) and Eric Yarnell (Bastyr University), - and the list goes on!

This year, I am excited to announce that MSU and USDA worked together with
MPWG partners to incorporate a Researcher-Producer Panel into their program
to describe current research (on forest botanicals other than ginseng) and
discuss grower's needs for future research. Panelists include: Peter
Borchard (Companion Plants Nursery). Chris Burdette (Chady Oaks Farm),
Richo Cech (Horizon Herbs), David Cooke (Kanawha Coutny Extension), Jeanine
Davis (NC State University), and Edward Fletcher (Strategic Sourcing). A
discussion sectino has been worked into the schedule to ensure that
audience members have time provide their success stories or discuss their
practical needs when it comes to forest botanicals production.

The Symposium program was also expanded (beginning a full day ealrier!) to
incoporate a session devoted to the Fundamentals of Ginseng Production.
With sessions led by experts from WV (Fred Hays, WV Ginseng Grower's
Association; Center for Sustainable Resources; and David Cooke, Kanawha
County Extension Agent) as well as speakers from New York (Bob Beyfuss,
Cornell Cooperative Extension) and North Carolina (Ed Fletcher, Strategic
Sourcing). The session will provide important perspectives on various
aspects of ginseng production and should be very informative.

But, you don't need to be a grower to attend - perhaps you live in
Appalachia and want to know more about the native species on your property.
Perhaps you have already incorporated several of these species into your
daily life and want to learn more. The Symposium coordinators have worked
very hard on a graduated registration fee to encourage as many folks as
possible to attend.

Hope to see you there!
