Upcoming EDRR Training Workshop – Wilmington, North Carolina – May 22, 2010

On Saturday, May 22, 2010, the Cape Fear Arch Conservation Collaboration,
the North Carolina Exotic Pest Plant Council, and the North Carolina
Coastal Reserve will co-host the first of a series of training workshops
aimed at developing a Coastal North Carolina Early Detection and Reporting
Network for Invasive Species.  The primary goal of this workshop will be to
provide an overview of emerging invasive species issues and problems that
threaten the Carolina Coast – as well strategies for preventing the
establishment and spread of new invaders through survey and monitoring of
important natural resource areas such as state parks and forests by staff
and trained volunteers.

Workshop Overview.  Topics covered in the workshop will include an Overview
of the National EDRR System for Invasive Plants (Randy Westbrooks, USGS),
Strategies for Developing EDRR capacity in N.C. (Margaret Fields, TNC),
Overview of the State EDRR Target Species List (Rick Iverson, NCDA, and
others), The NCDA Plant Regulatory Program (Rick Iverson, NCDA), Phragmites
Prevention and Control in Coastal North Carolina (Jean Lynch, NC State
Parks System), The N.C. Beach Vitex Eradication Program (Melanie Doyle, Ft.
Fisher Aquarium), and Invasive Species Management Training (Rebecca
Westbrooks, Southeastern Community College).

Field Trip.  Following the workshop, Melanie Doyle will lead the group on a
field trip to Wrightsville Beach to look at efforts by the Beach Vitex Task
Force to eradicate Beach vitex (Vitex rotundifolia), an introduced woody
vine, from communities along the Carolina Coast.  Beach vitex, which was
introduced to the Carolina Coast as an ornamental plant about 25 years ago,
degrades sea turtle nesting habitat and increases dune erosion during
winter storms.

Registration Website:  www.nccoastaltraining.net (Listed under Scheduled
Workshops)
Registration Fee:  $5.00.                   Registration Deadline: May 17,
2010.
For more information about the workshop, contact Whitney Jenkins with the
North Carolina Coastal Reserve.
