In Worcester, about 40 miles south of the (NH) state border, 777 property
owners have given permission for officials to destroy infected trees, as
well as other nearby hardwoods, and another 94 people have allowed
destruction of infested trees, officials said.

In the first week of the operation, which began Monday, more than 1,000
trees of all sizes were felled and chipped by two private firms contracting
for the state and federal governments. The destruction will continue for at
least five weeks throughout parts of the 64-square-mile quarantine zone.

Follow-up efforts, including surveys and treatment, could go on for as long
as a decade.
