Subject: [ma-eppc] US Nature Conservancy ed piece about firewood as a vector for damaging insects
Dear forest pest & weed mavens,
I thought you would be interested that The Nature Conservancy has posted on its website some information about firewood as a pathway/vector for transport of emerald ash borer, Asian longhorned beetle, sudden oak death, and other nasty invasive forest insects and diseases.
Take a look! And inform your friends. go to http://www.nature.org/initiatives/forests/features/art22189.html
Sign the pledge on Union of Concerned Scientists' webpage (a link is posted at TNC's site)
Also, Hawai`i is getting more aggressive about protecting itself from invasive species.
The Hawaiian legislature adopted - over the governnor's veto - a measure imposing a small fee on every shipping container that enters the port. I believe the funds will be used to support inspection and early detection & rapid response.
The Hawaiian Department of Agriculture has adopted a regulation restricting imports of plants and plant parts in the Myrtaceae family in order to prevent introduction of a more virulent form of the ohia (eucalyptus) rust fungus. I have a copy of the regulation - contact me directly if you wish to obtain one.
