POSITION TITLE:          SEASONAL FIELD ECOLOGIST, Short-Term, Full-Time
(Approximately 3-month position between May and September 2006)
JOB TITLE:          11000-Paid Intern
JOB FAMILY:  Conservation
FLSA STATUS:  Non-Exempt
LOCATION:          Delaware Water Gap NRA, Upper Delaware SRR
SUPERVISOR: Community Ecologist, Middletown, PA
TIME COMMITMENT: 35-40 hours per week, for up to 3 months
DATE:  February 27, 2006

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program is conducting research projects
in two scenic National Parks, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation
Area and the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River.  These projects
collect baseline information that is essential to the management of
vegetation communities, invasive plants, and prescribed and wildland fires
in the parks.  The Seasonal Field Ecologist will collect field data to
assess the accuracy of newly-created vegetation and fire fuel maps and to
gather information on the abundance and distribution of invasive plant
species in the parks.  The Seasonal Field Ecologist will coordinate duties
directly with state Heritage staff while performing these functions.

The Seasonal Field Ecologist will be a full-time, short-term position with
a flexible schedule for up to 40 hours per week for up to 3 months.  Exact
start/end dates and schedule are negotiable.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:
·          Currently working toward a Master's or Bachelor's degree in
Botany, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related natural science area.
·          Knowledge of common plants in Pennsylvania and ability to
identify species in the field.
·          Ability to use a dichotomous key.
·          Ability to navigate by GPS in remote areas.
·          Working knowledge of ESRI Arc GIS 8.x or higher, MS Access, and
common software applications (Word, Excel).
·          Motivated, conscientious, and detail-oriented.

DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:
·          Ability to take initiative and work independently to carry out
assignments with minimal supervision.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
·          Communicate with Supervisor to coordinate progress on projects,
work schedule, travel arrangements, and supply needs.
·          Strong oral and written communication skills.  Excellent
organizational skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
·          Ability to work in variable weather conditions, remote locations
and often in physically demanding circumstances.
·          Valid driver's license and safe driving record.
·          Willingness to work alone for long hours in an isolated setting.
Work requires occasional physical exertion and/or muscular strain.  Work
involves several disagreeable elements and/or exposure to job hazard's
where there is some possibility of injury.
