BACKGROUND: The Student Conservation Association (SCA), in partnership with
the National Park Service (NPS), is taking part in a nationwide effort to
eradicate invasive plants. After habitat loss, invasive species are
considered the greatest threat to global diversity. Invasive species are
known for their disruptive and destructive characteristics in relation to
natural habitats and ecological conditions. A team of one project leader
and four interns will focus on controlling invasive plants at the park
listed above.

DATES: now- December 23, 2005

RESPONSIBILITES: Invasive vegetation removal through mechanical and
chemical means; GPS mapping of invasive vegetation sites; data collection
on surveys, treatments, and monitoring activities: 85%; community outreach
and educational activities: 15 %. Interns may use hatchets, loppers,
chainsaws, other cutting tools, and chemical sprayers.

TRAINING PROVIDED: Off-road driving certification and driver education;
geospatial data collection; invasive plant and native plant identification;
manual and chemical tools usage and safety; team development.  Possible
opportunity to become certified in Wilderness First Aid/CPR.

REQUIRED: Valid driver’s license and ability to pass background check;
willingness to use chemical and non-chemical invasive plant control
methods; excellent interpersonal skills; ability to carry up to 25 lbs. up
to 2 miles over steep terrain.

DESIRED: College coursework or field experience in botany, ecology,
resource management, environmental science; experience using GPS;
experience operating power equipment and 4-wheel drive vehicles;
topographical map reading skills; experience and interest in living and
working outdoors; sense of adventure.

BENEFITS: $60/week stipend, travel grant for relocation expenses, $1,250
AmeriCorps Education Award available, housing provided at the park in a log
cabin, vehicle for work purposes, training and certifications listed above,
federal workers compensation coverage and SCA accident coverage, optional
health insurance at low rate ($3-10 week), work uniform provided.
