We have not ever seen evidence to support the idea that seed ripens after it is collected. We have received multiple green collections of
<i>Poa secunda</i> (along with other grasses) and they generally result in a lower yield with a large amount of desiccated seed. This result doesn’t change depending on how much stem material is included. It is hard to know on our end whether collectors are
hoping for “after-ripening” with these collections, if they are unsure of how to judge maturity, or if they are just collecting opportunistically without being concerned about optimizing maturity.

I haven’t personally collected <i>Poa secunda</i>, but any seed that shatters easily from the stem is almost certainly mature. This is partly why we recommend stripping seed rather than cutting the stem. We totally understand the need to cut stems but ask
that they be kept to less than 6 inches so they will pass through processing equipment easily. If stems are cut, take into account that yields will be lower so you may need to collect more raw weight to compensate.</p>

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Can anyone offer advice on how to tell when Poa secunda seed is ready to collect? I assume that if the inflorescence is falling apart that it's probably dispersing and therefore ready, but can it be picked any earlier
than that? Does it after-ripen at all? Should I be stripping inflorescences in the field or taking whole ones? I was guessing Bend would want them stripped, but does that affect ripening?</span></p>
