Below are notes for the SOS collectors' call and data portal training on March 7, 2017. Attached is a User Guide to the SOS Data Portal for reference.

There were 23 participants on the call. If you missed the training and have not used the SOS Data Portal yet, need login information, or if you have questions, please contact me at lriibe@blm.gov

SOS Web-based Data Portal:

A user name and password is assigned to each SOS collecting team. These log-in credentials will allow your team to access ALL collections data for your SOS collecting team. You will also have access to a sub-set of information for all 19,000+ SOS collections in the database.

LOOKING UP ACCESSIONS: Search by species name to see all collections of that species. Exporting the data will give you all data connected to your team's collections and a subset (collection number, ecoregion, state, year) of all other collections. Search by collection number to open a specific SOS collection. You will be able to open your own collecting team's accession to edit and/or update collection data. Search by collecting team to access all accessions for a specific SOS collecting team. This is useful for exporting collection data in a specific region. We will be adding Ecoregion, State, Collection Year, and Collection Date Range to the search options.

CREATING A NEW ACCESSION: First step - enter the seed collection reference number in the "Create" section (team code, hyphen, and the sequential collection number, for example: CA690-17; MARSB-397). This number must be exactly formatted to retain consistency throughout all SOS data and should never to be used twice. Once this accession number is created, you will not be able to edit it, so please double check it is correct!

To save the data you have entered hit "Submit" at the bottom of the page. "Clear" will clear all changes you made, "Log out" and "Cancel" are nearly the same, but please use the log-out button.

The attached User Guide has additional information on guidelines and how-tos for data entry.

**If folks think a step-by-step guide to data entry (more detailed than the attached User Guide) would be useful please let me know, especially mentors training new interns each year..

SOS Collectors' Call:

SOS Training is coming up!

Boise, ID: May 15 - 19. This training is for CLM Interns.

SOS East may hold a training in North Carolina the first week of June. More info to come.

Target Species List - Coordinate with state and ecoregional leads to identify priority species. Exporting data from the portal may be useful for gap analyses. Work with BLM colleagues - ES&R, wildlife, reclamation folks, others in the field office that will have native seed needs in the coming years. Please send your targeted species list to lriibe@blm.gov. Remember: SOS collections are of common species needed for restoration and rehabilitation projects. Species excluded from SOS collections include rare or T&E species, known recalcitrant species (Quercus, Vitis), populations collected the previous year, non-native species, and species that were seeded on restoration/reclamation sites, post-fire, etc.

Permission to collect - Written documentation of permission to collect on non-BLM land (state, private, wildlife refuges, etc.) is required. SOS collections made on BLM land do not need formal permission. **If you are a contractor and have concerns about permits for collecting on BLM land, contact your manager at the BLM field office. A letter granting permission to collect signed by your manager or a free-use/research permit will be sufficient.

The next SOS Collectors' Call will be Tuesday, April 4, 2017

12 noon Eastern

11 am Central

10 am Mountain

9 am Pacific

8 am Alaska

Talk to you then!

Lindsey

On Tue, Mar 7, 2017 at 9:58 AM, Lindsey Riibe <riibe.lindsey@gmail.com> wrote:

The call today will begin with the SOS web portal training (about 20 mins).
