From alindquist at blm.gov Tue May 4 13:18:13 2021 From: alindquist at blm.gov (Lindquist, Anna E) Date: Tue, 4 May 2021 18:18:13 +0000 Subject: [SOS-PCA] May 2021 Call Notes Message-ID: Hi everyone, Thanks to those who were able to join us for the call this morning, and special thanks to Erika for showing us some great herbarium specimens! Highlights are below and our next call will be June 1st. * Thank you to everyone who participated in our first national virtual training! The recording will be available in a couple weeks and will be sent to everyone who attended. If you did not attend and would like to see it, send me an email with the subject line "SOS Training Recording". * Target Species Lists and other Team changes: I know this year is proving especially challenging with the drought, so keep me updated on any changes to your species, estimated collecting numbers, collecting dates, etc. and let me know if there is anything I can do to help you meet your goals. * Bend is almost done cleaning the 2020 lots and is ready to receive the 2021 collections. I will be sending out the final testing and balance results to 2020 teams when I receive them. For this season's collections, remember to let Kayle know when you ship them, and always ship early in the week (never on a Friday!). You might see a client email come from Bend soon - this does not apply to SOS. * Herbarium Voucher tips: * Please follow the guidance document and the label template on the website (blm.gov/sos) when sending specimens to Smithsonian. Small labels are hard to read, so try to keep the same formatting as the template (bolded header, at least 10 pt. font, and a quarter of a page in size). * Be mindful of leaving space at the two bottom corners of the page so there is room for the labels. To avoid the temptation of collecting too much material, trim your newspaper a couple inches smaller than a standard mounting page (8.5 inches by 11.5 inches). * Good specimens are pressed as flat as possible and do not have any dirt on the roots. * If your specimen is very large (e.g., a grass) you can accordion/fold it several times to make it fit on one page. Thanks again everyone! I will be in and out of the office enjoying the flora of Arizona and Utah until Thursday, May 13th, so there may be a delayed response to any emails you send me. This is the day after the Monday holiday, so it might feel like a Monday, but please join us if you are able. This is a Microsoft Teams call for all active collectors, mentors, and partners and as such, is required. Please email me if you need the invite or will not be able to attend the call. As a reminder, there is a call-in number available in the description on the invite, for those who can't be at a computer. Monthly calls are always the first Tuesday of the month at the following time: 8 AM Alaska 9 AM Pacific 10 AM Mountain 11 AM Central Noon Eastern Reminders: - Thanks to everyone who has sent in their Target Species lists so far! - Please notify Bend when you ship seeds. Remember, if you collect from a population over multiple days, do not ship the seed until you are completely done with that collection. If a collection takes up multiple bags/boxes, they should all be sent together. - As collecting season picks up, please double check that you are following all parts of the SOS Technical Protocol when scouting and collecting. When verifying a site/population remember to: * Key out your target species? * Estimate population size & available seed? * Evaluate current season?s fruit production? * Estimate potential seed viability ?- cut tests! * Collect voucher specimens? (3 per collection) * Place markers? if necessary * Record images, locality, microhabitat, associated species? * Plan return visit And when you collect seed: * Estimate the number of available seeds ? cut test!? * Decide on a sampling strategy and method? (walking in straight lines? sampling from every 5th plant or 20 percent from each plant?) * Fill out the data sheet? * Plan a return trip if necessary * Optional: take photos of yourself and team in the field! Finally, I wanted to draw attention to the Society for Ecological Restoration's upcoming conference and their Make a Difference Week hub. There are a variety of volunteer restoration opportunities across the country (and world!) leading up to the conference. To see if there is an event in your area, go to their website and click either "Event Map" or "Event Listing" at the bottom of the page: https://www.ser-rrc.org/make-a-difference/ Thanks, have a lovely weekend!
