What will you learn?
This 90-minute panel presentation will provide a detailed look at the first international framework for the delivery of socially and environmentally sound ecological restoration after mining. In addition to the presentations, it will include time for Q&A. Recognizing the critically important role that mining, and the products from mining, play in meeting societal needs, the Mine Site Restoration Standards recommend not just best practice, but “future practice” that harnesses the unique role and resources of the mining industry to be applied toward the most restorative post-mining practices possible. While post-mining reclamation requirements vary widely from country to country, the most common requirements focused on achieving safe, stable, and non-polluting status, with little attention paid to ecological recovery, even though that might be a priority for local stakeholders, including Indigenous peoples. The Mine Site Restoration Standards, therefore, encourage the mining industry to go further, and to implement post-mining ecological restoration both within and beyond the mining footprint. These Standards thus fill an important gap by providing a roadmap toward a more restorative approach to post-mining recovery in order to reduce the ecological and social impacts of mining over the long term, including from the global challenge of abandoned mines, thus benefiting both human wellbeing and nature, including biodiversity.
