Senate Agriculture Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and other lawmakers today renewed their legislative push to plant more trees in national forests. The lawmakers reintroduced legislation in the Senate and House called the "Repairing Existing Public Land by Adding Necessary Trees Act," which would lift the $30 million annual cap on funds that may be drawn from the federal Reforestation Trust Fund. If enacted, they said, the bill<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.agriculture.senate.gov%2Fimo%2Fmedia%2Fdoc%2FRYA21303.pdf&data=04%7C01%7Cmargaret_park%40fws.gov%7C26877d4e4b7e4e61118b08d8ea501006%7C0693b5ba4b184d7b9341f32f400a5494%7C0%7C0%7C637516977289137522%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=4Kx4y0vrviuz1xA5cEObXadqcA04eimPUtgT%2FPWvxsk%3D&reserved=0> would make up to $123 million available annually for reforestation on lands managed by the Forest Service, providing carbon sequestration and other benefits. The bill has support from a variety of conservation and industry groups, including the Nature Conservancy, American Forests and the Lyme Timber Co., although a version introduced last year didn't advance.
