TITLE: Environmental Specialist 4 (Stewardship Ecologist)
START DATE: Mid – Late February or early March 2014
MONTHLY RATE: The salary is $3,173 to $5,077 per month plus state benefits
package.
HOURS: Full-time

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: The Tennessee Department of Environment and
Conservation, Division of Natural Areas anticipates hiring a working level
full-time Environmental Specialist 4 to aid in oversight and management of
Middle Tennessee state natural areas and supervise and assist the Natural
Areas Program Operations Steward in natural area management. Minimum

The Environmental Specialist 4 job classification lists a variety of
possible work activities.Specifically, this posting is for a Stewardship
Ecologist who will directly report to the Natural Area Program
Administrator. The successful candidate will assist the program in
ecological restoration and management of state natural areas and rare
species habitats as well as construction and maintenance of trails,
boundaries, and other facilities. The successful candidate will also be
responsible for writing and updating natural area management plans,
assisting other natural areas staff throughout the state, working with
outside contractors, and providing direct supervision to the Natural Areas
Operation Steward. The position will be stationed in Nashville, Tennessee.

In addition to the minimum requirements, the successful candidate will
possess:
Working knowledge of ecological concepts of Tennessee’s fauna, flora, and
natural communities,
Familiarity with conservation issues in Tennessee or the region,
Experience with the use of prescribed fire for management of glades,
barrens, and grassland ecosystems, including writing burn prescriptions,
Experience with prescription and implementation of integrated pest
management for treatment of invasive exotic species,
Excellent verbal and written communication skills,
Ability to provide outreach and programming,
Familiarity with ArcMap GIS software, and GPS,
Ability to operate various machines used in land management (e.g. tractors,
chainsaws, mowers, herbicide sprayers),
Excellent attention to detail, and
Ability to conduct field work and site assessments, sometimes in difficult
terrain, including the ability to meet physical standards required for
wildland / prescribed fire certification.
