socializing.
The Conference provides a fertile environment for a varied audience to
expand their knowledge of regionally appropriate native plants and
sustainable landscapes. Attendees include home and professional gardeners,
teachers and students, as well as landscape, nursery, botanic garden and
environmental professionals. Among various informative speakers and
workshops, the program will feature,
- Leslie Sauer, landscape designer and restoration expert, and author of
The Once and Future Forest: A Guide to Forest Restoration Strategies.
- Jim Plyler, Owner, Natural Landscapes native plant nursery and local
native, woody plant expert
- Dr. Bernd Blossey, Cornell University, researcher on the impact and
control of invasive plants
- Dr. Steven Handel, Rutgers University, pioneer in the restoration of
urban landscapes
Other topics include: Rain Gardens, Green Roofs, Cedar Bogs, Lichens and
Mosses, Fungi, Native Azaleas, Milkweed for Monarchs, Grasses and Sedges,
and Native Orchids.
Pre-conference workshops offer the choice of (1) a trip to local private,
native plant gardens; (2) a native plant 'adventure;' (3) plant
propagations; and (4) a workshop on designing with natives. Entertaining
and informative evening programs will include a panel discussion among
managers of noted local public gardens, and popular speaker Carol Reese on
the subject of Titillating Liaisons Between Flowers and People, each to be
followed by a networking, social event.
The Native Plant Sale will be open to the public during select hours for
those who wish to purchase native plants but cannot attend the Conference.
Hours for the public plant sale are Friday, June 2, from 3:30 - 7:00 PM
and Saturday, June 3 from 8 AM - Noon.
The Native Plants in the Landscape Conference is co-sponsored by Bartram's
Garden, Mt. Cuba Center, New Moon Nursery, US National Arboretum, and
Millersville University's Departments of Biology and of Professional
Training and Development.
