You will get experience creating a vegetation map using GIS, collecting reconnaissance samples, practicing techniques of photo interpretation, delineation, and attribution, and validating a vegetation map through accuracy assessment.</p><p class="MsoNormal"> </p><p class="MsoNormal">INTRO TO PLANT IDENTIFICATION – taught by Julie Kierstead</p><p class="MsoNormal">April 22-24, Redding, CA</p><p class="MsoNormal">In this workshop, you will learn to identify plants in common CA families through classroom exercises covering plant parts, terminology, and how to use a dichotomous key, as well as time in the field getting hands-on experience in the Redding area.</p><p class="MsoNormal"> </p><p class="MsoNormal">RARE PLANT SURVEY PROTOCOLS – taught by Heath Bartosh & Aaron Sims, with a guest lecture from Kristi Lazar</p><p class="MsoNormal">July 7-8, Truckee, CA (Tahoe Region)</p><p class="MsoNormal">In this workshop, you will learn to use the best available science to prepare for and conduct rare plant surveys and report your findings. This training includes one day learning concepts in the classroom, followed by one day in the field in the Truckee area getting hands-on experience surveying rare plants.</p><p class="MsoNormal"> </p><p class="MsoNormal">INTRO TO PLANT IDENTIFICATION – taught by Nick Jensen & Sandy Namoff</p><p class="MsoNormal">July 28-30, Mammoth Lakes, CA (Eastern Sierra)</p><p class="MsoNormal">In this workshop, you will learn to identify plants in 15 common families, which account for over 5,000 taxa – more than 70% of the plant diversity in CA! This workshop will include two days in the classroom learning plant parts, terminology, and how to use a dichotomous key, as well as a full day in the field getting hands-on experience in the Eastern Sierra.</p><p class="MsoNormal"> </p><p class="MsoNormal">VEGETATION RAPID ASSESSMENT/RELEVÉ – taught by Betsy Harbert & Jaime Ratchford</p><p class="MsoNormal">August 18-20, Santa Cruz, CA</p><p class="MsoNormal">In this workshop, you will learn to sample vegetation, focusing on collecting data using the CNPS-CDFW combined vegetation rapid assessment/relevé method. Instructors will discuss applications of fine-scale vegetation sampling, classification, and mapping, how to document sensitive natural communities, and how vegetation information fits into planning documents.</p><p class="MsoNormal"> </p><p class="MsoNormal">CEQA IMPACT ASSESSMENT – taught by David Magney</p><p class="MsoNormal">September 1-3, Sacramento, CA</p><p class="MsoNormal">In this workshop, you will learn to read and analyze the biological resources section of an Environmental Impact Report or Mitigated Negative Declaration prepared to satisfy the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). This workshop will provide guidance on how to accurately assess the impact of a project, and submit critical, scientifically-based comments in response to CEQA documents.</p><p class="MsoNormal"> </p><p class="MsoNormal">MITIGATION MEASURES & MONITORING – taught by David Magney</p><p class="MsoNormal">October 27-29, Imperial Beach, CA (San Diego County)</p><p class="MsoNormal">In this workshop, you will learn the framework for mitigation and mitigation monitoring for botanical resources, based primarily on CEQA impact assessments. Topics will include which mitigation measures need to be monitored and why, various monitoring methods, and thresholds of significance and success.
