<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-CA">Hi – I hope everyone is well and enjoying the summer. I am wondering if any of you have had experience with translocating herbaceous perennials. We have a critically endangered species in Canada and the US, Furbish’s
Lousewort (<i>Pedicularis furbishiae</i>) that is found only along a 130 mile stretch of the St John River in New Brunswick and Maine. It is found on steep, eroded banks of the river. The plant is also a hemiparasitic plant, relying on associated veg (including
speckled alder) for water and minerals. One of our 5 stands of lousewort will be lost this year due to erosion so we are planning on moving the lousewort and associated plants into a greenhouse. The 29 lousewort plants are in just a 1 meter square area with
alder and other herbaceous perennials. The group in the US working on the lousewort and our NB group have never attempted this. I am wondering if any of you have had any experience in translocating plants and might have some tips for us. We are just using
common sense which in this case doesn’t feel that common and propose to translocate the plants when they are dormant, taking as much soil and associated plants.
