<p><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif">United Plant Savers (UpS) has developed an adaptable, transparent tool that can be used to quantify and compare vulnerability to overharvest for wild collected medicinal plants. Many of these plants reside
in American forests and on US Forest Service, National Forest System lands. The new assessment tool (<a href="http://goldensealsanctuary.org/species-at-risk-assessment-tool" target="_blank">http://goldensealsanctuary.org/species-at-risk-assessment-tool</a>) scores species
according to their life history, the effects of harvest, their abundance and range, habitat, and demand. The resulting rankings, based on explicit criteria rather than expert opinion, will make it easier for land managers to discuss areas of vulnerability
and set conservation priorities, permits, and create a list of the most threatened medicinal plants in temperate North America.</span><u></u><u></u></p>

<u></u></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif">Susan Leopold is the executive director of United Plant Savers (UpS). She received her master in environmental landscape design from the Conway School, and her doctorate in ethnobotany from Antioch New England.
Before United Plant Savers, Leopold previously worked as director of the Bull Run Mountain Conservancy, special project coordinator for Virginia Outdoors Foundation, and as librarian for the Oak Spring Garden Library.</span><u></u><u></u></p>
