the meeting (prepared by one of my colleagues). Also attaching a list of
motions having to do with plant that were adopted by the Congress - note
the motion on fungi and the nod to NatureServe, a long-standing close Cooperator
with PCA's and the North American Red List Authority!</font>

<br><font size=3 face="sans-serif">Note that plants are mentioned several
times in the Best Management Practices for Marine protected Areas, as habitat
or performing ecosystem service, of course - but they <i>are </i>mentioned!
It could also be assumed that there are implicit references to plants throughout
the document, where the term "species" is used.</font>

<br><font size=2 face="sans-serif">What will it do: Assess functional
decline in ecosystems; "will identify if an ecosystem is vulnerable,
endangered, or critically endangered, based on an agreed and internationally
accepted set of criteria for risk assessment."</font>
<br><font size=2 face="sans-serif">Goal: By 2025 create a Red List of Ecosystems,
says J.P. Rodriguez of Venezuela.</font>
<br><font size=2 face="sans-serif">Current trials of Red List criteria
for ecosystems are being conducted. 18 test studies have been carried
out including in N. America; France (coastal lagoons); Senegal. In
the period 2012-2014 a<b> Red List of Continental Ecosystems of the Americas</b>
is being developed. Who is involved in the N. American effort: Patrick
Conner, Chief Ecologist for NatureServe; Western Governors’ Association;
Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation; IUCN.</font>
<br><font size=2 face="sans-serif">This workshop was attended by Cristian
Samper, of WCS who sat in the audience and listened. There were about
60 people in the audience for this workshop.</font>

<br><font size=3 face="sans-serif"><b>Green List of Well-Managed Protected
Areas:</b></font>
<ul>
<li><font size=2 face="sans-serif">Official launch will be at the next
IUCN World Parks Congress to be held in Australia in November 2014.</font>
<li><font size=2 face="sans-serif">Protected areas wishing to be included
on the IUCN Green List will have to satisfy a threshold of agreed criteria,
including meeting their conservation goals, achieving effective management
and facilitating equitable governance.</font>
<li><font size=2 face="sans-serif">Green List will also assist national
governments and their conservation partners to meet their goals under the
Convention on Biological Diversity’s Aichi Targets, particularly Target
11, which states that by 2020 at least 17% of the world’s terrestrial
areas and 10% of marine areas should be effectively and equitably managed
and conserved.</font></ul>
<br><font size=3 face="sans-serif"><b>Report: 100 Most Threatened
Species</b></font><font size=2 face="sans-serif"> (issued jointly
by ZSL and IUCN/SSC);</font><font size=1 face="sans-serif"> (Note:
this report has received the most media coverage.)</font>
