May 3, 2011, article in ArgusLeader.com, entitled "Native plants thrive
in SDSUs expanding McCrory Gardens," is generating a bit of discussion
on the native plant listserve for the national Plant Conservation Alliance.

<br><font size=2 face="sans-serif">This is a touching story about a man's
connection with plants. However, the article implies that native plants
are anything hardy to South Dakota and several photos feature species of
Eurasian origin. Certainly many non-native species have become naturalized
and are as much a part of our collective heritage as natives. But, it is
inappropriate to confuse the public about what is and is not native. "Native"
is used as a buzzword more and more today and it's misapplication devalues
our own native species. Please consider this friendly input when writing
future articles.</font>
