<pre wrap="">This and Fred Hays comment brings up a good point - "moss" in stores and
landscape yards covers several life forms including lichen and vascular
plants - for example Spanish moss is Tillsandia usneoides, a vascular plant.
Its name in turn is derived from Usnea - a lichen genus. Tillsandia
usneoides actually looks very similar to some species of Usnea, especially
Usnea longissima which is rare and threatened with extirpation, if not
extinction in many parts of its range. I think it is clear that the
"wholesale" collection of plant material with little understanding or
appreciation of its composition warrants concern.

Thanks for an interesting article you forwarded. My ignorant question is,
"what is all this moss used for?" Can it be used as sphagnum moss is?

Please post:

Attached is an article from today's NY Times science section (Nov. 30,
2004). The original article in the paper has a couple of good photos. It's
a fair assessment of very complex issue.
