Fire on the Ground: Explore the Benefits of Prescribed Burns
Saturday, Nov. 11, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Stop by Rock Spring Trailhead for a chance to speak with Marin Water staff and AmeriCorps members about the use of prescribed fire, an important tool in a proactive approach to fire fuel management and a more resilient, ecologically healthy watershed. Safely burning off overgrown vegetation is a natural, efficient and cost-effective way to maintain and restore forest health and protect water quality, our water delivery infrastructure and the community.

Marin County Fire Department, in coordination with Marin Water, recently conducted a prescribed fire operation in the Rock Spring area on the southern end of the Mt. Tam Watershed. See the effects of this prescribed fire application first-hand and learn about its role in our long-term forest health strategy. You can also take our new, self-guided walk that will lead you through forest, grassland, serpentine and the historic Mountain Theatre in a 1-mile interpretive loop.

Habitat Restoration: Broom Removal
Wednesday, Nov. 22, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. (Thanksgiving Week Special)

Start a new family tradition by thanking nature through a morning of hands-on stewardship. Our grassy meadows are home to sun-loving plants and animals and are hunting grounds for birds of prey. The fruits of our open canopy hardwoods – oak, bay and madrone trees – nourish abundant forest wildlife. Help us improve the oak woodland and grassland habitat near Bon Tempe Lake by removing invasive French broom. Uncover healthy plant communities that support a high diversity of wildlife.

Registration is encouraged but not required. The event is family-friendly with parental supervision for ages 8 and older. Volunteers ages 16 or older are welcome to join with signed permission slips. Tools, gloves, snacks and water are provided. Please dress for variable weather and bring a water bottle.

Meeting location is Lake Lagunitas parking lot at 9 a.m. sharp! Parking passes are provided to volunteers. Call 415-945-1128 after 7 a.m. the morning of the event for updates in case of extreme weather.
