*Overview:
Title: Assistant Professor of Biology
Appointment Date: Jan or Aug 2023

*Duties: We are seeking a botany professor who will look forward to taking advantage of our geographic
location in the botanically diverse northern Chihuahuan Desert region, using the natural laboratory in teaching
and research.  We also hope that the successful applicant will be interesting in maintaining and eventually
directing the active Sul Ross herbarium, which currently houses an estimated 100,000 specimens.  The
herbarium has a healthy and growing endowment.  Dean Warnock has discussed plans for developing a
Botany/Herbarium Chair, which could significantly increase the salary of a professor who holds that chair.

*Eligibility: Candidates must already be authorized to work in the U.S.
Texas Law requires a 60 day waiting period before new state employees are eligible to enroll in health
insurance.

Ph.D. in Plant Systematics, with training in modern DNA techniques; strongly prefer broad training in
botany, with commitment to teaching an array of undergraduate and graduate courses, and interests in
in field botany and taxonomy; ABD candidates will also be considered. ABD candidates will be hired as
an instructor (tenure-track) until the terminal degree is received.

Primary Responsibilities: Teach 12 semester credit hours per semester (usually three courses); course
reduction for active research. Courses can include, but not be limited to, General Botany, Biology for
Majors I and II, Plants and People, Plant Systematics, Field Botany, Plant Taxonomy, and other advanced
courses.

Delivery of courses will be through face to face as well as distance delivery.
Establishment of an externally funded research program involving undergraduate and graduate
students, as well as participation in professional development, and university and community service.
Responsible for personal safety and the safety of others; must exercise due caution and practice safe
work habits at all times.

Position is Security Sensitive.
This is a nine-month tenure-track position.

The University offers an excellent benefits package to faculty members including: a free basic individual
health care package, the option of a state retirement through Teachers Retirement System (TRS) or
Optional Retirement Package (ORP), traditionally available summer teaching opportunities, small class
sizes, and a small private liberal arts college environment rarely found in a state supported university.
The Department of Natural Sciences offers BS and MS degrees in Biology, Geology, and Natural Resource
Management. The graduate programs enroll approximately thirty students, primarily thesis seeking.
Although research is encouraged, excellence in classroom instruction is the first priority of the
department.

Sul Ross State University, located in Alpine, Texas, is a member of the Texas State University System. It is
accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award

At an elevation of 4,480 feet in the scenic Davis Mountains of Tran-s Pecos Texas, and on the periphery
