Biodiversity and the Role of Disturbance in Managing Natural Ecosystems with Nate Weston
When: Saturday, February 26, 2022, 10:00am (Central Time Zone)

Program Description: Nate Weston, Geospatial Ecologist with the Beaver Watershed Alliance, will discuss the role of disturbance and its effect on biodiversity, especially in the management of natural ecosystems. In ecological terms, disturbances change the environment's status quo. Whether natural or human-driven, disturbances positively or negatively affect ecosystems, their function, and how organisms interact therein. Understanding the role of disturbance in shaping natural communities provide land managers valuable tools to assist nature in encouraging desirable outcomes like biodiversity while mitigating undesirable consequences like invasive species infestation or complete ecological collapse.

Speaker Bio: Nate is the Geospatial Ecologist for the Beaver Watershed Alliance, a water quality non-profit located in Elkins, AR promoting voluntary best-management practices to landowners and municipalities in the 1,200-square-mile Beaver Watershed and Beaver Lake itself, drinking water source for roughly 500,000 Arkansans. Nate has worked in landscape and restoration ecology, natural resources management, and environmental education for over ten years. As the Alliance's Geospatial Ecologist, he works directly with public and private landowners to develop voluntary land management strategies addressing erosion, native plants, invasive species management, habitat improvement, and overall watershed vitality. Nate enjoys cartography and the art of developing data-rich maps and models illustrating topics such as surface runoff and erosion and doing "walkabouts" with landowners looking to implement voluntary conservation practices, and helping the Alliance promote a holistic approach to watershed management for landowners in the Beaver Lake Watershed. Nate is currently serving as the President of the Arkansas Native Plant Society.
