Excerpt from this month's Southeastern Grasslands Initiative newsletter:

*Google Grassland Restoration

A momentous milestone was passed this summer: The Southeastern Grasslands Initiative, Roundstone Native Seed, and Quail Forever (QF)-in partnership and with funding from Google-planted 77 species on 50 acres of tallgrass prairie at Google's new data center in Clarksville, Tennessee. This is the most diverse prairie restoration ever planted in the Mid-South.

The Google site is located on what was once part of a 3.5-million-acre prairie called the Big Barrens stretching across parts of Tennessee and Kentucky, of which 99.99% has been lost since 1800. Google's funding is helping to restore this critically endangered ecosystem and support the development of a regional seedbank for prairie plants. This project will provide vital habitat for grassland birds and pollinators, as well as play an important role in carbon sequestration, soil health, and improved water quality in nearby Spring Creek. SGI, part of Austin Peay State University's Center of Excellence for Field Biology, very much appreciates Google's support.
