What will you learn?
In this two-part series, experts from the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at UGA and the Georgia Forestry Commission will share their insights on the science, guidance, and rules for Forestry BMPs (Best Management Practices) in Georgia.

Presenters:
Scott Thackston, Water Quality Program Coordinator, Georgia Forestry Commission
Dr. Jay Shelton, Associate Professor, UGA Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources

Part 1 - September 10, 2020:
We will discuss the science behind why forestry BMPs (Best Management Practices) are critical to good forestry, what they are designed to protect, and what guidance applies to forest landowners and service providers.

1:30-2:00 pm UGA’s Dr. Jay Shelton will present on the science and motivations behind BMPs.
2:00-3:00pm GFC’s Scott Thackston will provide an overview of the Georgia Forestry BMP Manual, who it applies to, and how compliance is monitored.
3:00-3:15pm Question & Answer

Part 2 - September 29, 2020:
We will discuss key findings from the most recent biennial assessment of Forestry BMP Implementation statewide and then reconsider those findings through the lens of landscape-level concerns.

1:30-2:00 pm GFC’s Scott Thackston will present results from the most recent BMPs biennial assessment and highlight key issues of concern.
2:00-3:00 pm UGA’s Dr. Jay Shelton will discuss implications of assessment results in the context of science and how forestry fits into the larger picture of water protection in Georgia.
3:00-3:15 pm Question & Answer
