Native Plant Conservation Campaign News: BBC Green Planet series will bring “Planet Earth” technology and resources to investigate the neglected kingdom - plants!

  <https://ymlpmail2.net/imgz/09yp_AnthonyzukoffsandsageprairieKS500.jpg> The BBC has announced that it will produce a new five part series about plant life on planet earth entitled The Green Planet and hosted by David Attenborough.

 

The production of this series is a welcome, if long overdue, development. The BBC has devoted dozens of shows <https://www.bbcearth.com/shows/>  to the animal kingdom over the years. This will be the first to focus on the plant kingdom.

 

Attenborough said in a press release <https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2019/the-green-planet>  “This is a wonderful opportunity to explore a neglected yet truly remarkable part of the natural world. Once again, the innovative approach of the BBC NHU and groundbreaking technology will reveal new and surprising wonders to the BBC audience.”

 

The series will use the latest technology to portray the planet from the point of view of plants. The series will travel to the USA, Costa Rica, Croatia and northern Europe, and explore diverse climates and ecosystems to show how plants live their lives. It will use new developments in “robotics, moving time-lapse, super-detail thermal cameras, deep focus ‘frame-stacking’ and ultra-high-speed to travel beyond the power of the human eye and make visible the amazing, hidden life of the green planet.”

 

The shows will “find time-travellers - seeds that can outlive civilisations, and plants that remain unchanged for decades. Attenborough will examine our relationship with plants, past, present and future, and reveal how all animal life, ourselves included, is totally dependent on plants.”

 

We do not know when the series will be presented, but it should offer new insights, beautiful images, and excellent outreach tools for native plant conservation advocates.
