In the semi-arid rangeland above the community of Okanogan, Washington,
Jean and Buzz Berney have run cattle on the Confederated Tribes of Colville
Reservation (CTCR) for the past 51 years. Jean, a Colville Tribal member,
worked with the Natural Resources Conservation Service to improve the
rangeland ground near Little Goose Lake. Jean has since leased this land to
a local cattle rancher as part of the tribal range unit. Jean is actively
involved in the management of this land because of her deep connection with
the wildlife species and the culturally significant plants that call this
landscape home.
