Job Title: Southwest Seed Partnership Coordinator
Office Location: Santa Fe, NM
Status: Full time
Duration: 1 year (with possibility for extension depending on performance
and funding)
Start date: November 12th, 2019 (flexible, but as soon as possible)
Compensation: $20.00-24.00/hour (depending on experience) with benefits

The Institute for Applied Ecology (IAE) is a dynamic nonprofit organization
whose mission is to conserve native species and habitats through
restoration, research and education. Our Southwest Office works in New
Mexico and Arizona. We cultivate partnerships to facilitate large-scale,
regional conservation projects, develop ecologically appropriate sources of
native seed, offer native species education opportunities and materials,
provide technical assistance to restoration and management planning and
implementation, and conduct on-the-ground habitat restoration and applied
research.
The Southwest Office of the *Institute for Applied Ecology *(
www.appliedeco.org) seeks to hire a Southwest Seed Partnership Coordinator
with exceptional communication skills and a background in botany, crop
science, restoration, ecology, or related field to lead a multi-regional
seed program. The goal of the Southwest Seed Partnership (SWSP) is to
increase the supply and diversity of appropriate native plant materials by
coordinating the needs of restoration partners and facilitating the native
seed industry for the southwest. The SWSP is implementing the National Seed
Strategy

*Specific responsibilities of the Southwest Seed Partnership Coordinator: *Make
high quality native plant materials available for restoration by leading
several activities:
· Native seed collections *(35%)*
o Work with partners to develop target species lists.
o Ensure permits are available for collection sites.
o Manage/track incoming (and outgoing) seed for all partners (NPS, BLM,
FS, DOT). Manage proper seed cleaning and storage.
o Supervise IAE NM seed crew and collection activities as needed. Help
provide direction and support to all SWSP seed teams. Collect seed using
Seeds of Success (SOS) protocols. Coordinate with AZ partners on
collections.
· Native seed production *(15%)*
o Work closely with IAE Southwest Director and Ag Liaison to facilitate
production contracts and agriculture contractors.
o Assist IAE Ag Liaison with oversight of production fields in NM and AZ
and with NM seed certification strategy.
o Support and expand the native seed industry for the Southwest.
o Build accessions for grow-out. Work with geneticists and other
researchers to recommend appropriate seed zones and research needed.
· Data organization and management *(25%)*
o Coordinate with seed teams to manage native seed collection and
accessions data using physical records, Access, and geodatabase.
· SWSP Coordination and Partnership building *(20%)*
o Work with project funders and other stakeholders (public and private
land managers, conservation organizations, contractors, and native seed
producers) to address diverse restoration needs in NM and AZ.
o Facilitate at least 1 stakeholder meeting per year (alternate between
NM & AZ) and help the partnership reach consensus on important plant
materials decisions.
o Lead 1-2 subcommittees that meet quarterly.
o Provide content for the SWSP webpage, reports, and newsletters, and
give presentations.
o Develop a strategic plan for the Southwest Seed Partnership to increase
capacity, create a budget and 5-year plan for collection and production,
and identify program benchmarks.
· Grant writing and budget management *(5%)*
o Write grant proposals to advance program goals and contribute to the
continuation of the Coordinator position.
o Track grants and manage project budgets
· Out-of-town travel (New Mexico and Arizona) and fieldwork (20-30%
of the time depending on season) may be required as needed to complete
these tasks. Overnight travel is expected about 5-10 times per year.
*Minimum Qualifications: *
· Bachelor’s degree biology/botany, agriculture, or related field
with 2 years of experience.
· Outgoing, energetic, and flexible. Excellent interpersonal,
verbal, and written communication skills. Experience working in groups,
networking, and engaging in public speaking and ability to effectively
facilitate large meetings.
· Crew lead or supervisory experience.
· Highly organized. Experience managing and coordinating
multiple/complex objectives. Able to set priorities and take initiative.
· Knowledge and experience with native seed and plants,
restoration, and ecology. Interest in working with farmers.
· Plant identification skills (including common weeds).
· Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
(Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
· Current U.S. driver’s license.
*Preferred Skills:*
· Master’s degree plus 2 years of relevant experience.
· Field experience working in southwest habitats and familiarity
with the flora.
· Knowledge of southwest restoration needs and potential native
seed stakeholders.
· Strong GIS skills.
· Database management experience.
· Familiarity with New Mexico plant communities.
· Familiarity with non-profits.
· Knowledge of the BLM SOS protocols and familiarity with
population genetic considerations.
· Experience working with native seed producers and understanding
of the nursery trade and seed production at different scales.
· Experience designing and implementing projects.
· Successful grant writing track record.
· Experience with contracts, contractor management, project
planning and implementation, budgeting, and permitting.
*Compensation and Start Date: *Compensation for this position is $20-24.00 per
hour, depending on experience. This is a full-time position (40 hour work
week) and is eligible for IAE’s competitive benefits package, including
health insurance and 401k retirement plan. Funding for this position is
secured for one year of employment (October 2019 - October 2020). However,
the position is intended to be long term and has a high probability of
being extended past one year, pending performance and additional funding.
