*Overview: A funded PhD assistantship in seed based restoration ecology is
available in the Faist Lab starting fall of 2019 at New Mexico State
University.

This position is part of a multi-disciplinary, collaborative, interagency
group that is seeking innovative solutions to long-standing and pressing
restoration questions. The area of focus for this position is on native
seed based restoration efforts to improve dryland restoration success.
Projects will involve fieldwork and complimentary greenhouse efforts.

*Position: PhD assistantship

*Location: Las Cruces, NM

*Who may apply: Successful candidates will have a strong academic record in
ecology, range sciences, biology, environmental science, or a similar
natural resource related field. Preference will be given to applicants who
have previous field research experience and an enthusiasm for working
outside in southwestern US climates. Position will be funded through
research and teaching assistantships. Please find further lab related
information at: http://aces.nmsu.edu/faculty/faist/

If interested in this position, email lab PI Akasha Faist (afaist at nmsu.edu)

PhD positions in Ecology and Geomorphology

*Deadline: March 18th, 2019

*Overview: We invite applications for two (2) NSF-funded PhD positions at
New Mexico State University. These positions provide exciting opportunities
to be a part of a multi-disciplinary, international group engaged in an
NSF-NERC Collaborative Research project: “Aeolian dust responses to
regional ecosystem change.” Under the supervision of the PIs, the students
will develop research to quantify the impacts of regional ecosystem changes
on North American dust emissions. Areas of focus for the project are:

   1. Impacts of cheatgrass invasion and changing fire cycle on vegetation
communities and dust emissions in the Great Basin.
   2. Impacts of oil and gas development on regional dust emissions from
   the Upper Colorado River Basin.
   3. Impacts of grassland-to-shrubland state transitions on aeolian
transport and dust emissions across the Chihuahuan Desert.

The research will utilize national ecological monitoring datasets (e.g.,
BLM AIM), sensor networks, remote sensing and numerical modeling to
characterize how Great Basin, Upper Colorado River Basin and Chihuahuan
Desert ecosystems are changing in response to different disturbance
mechanisms, identify structural and functional thresholds associated with
vegetation state transitions and aeolian processes, and quantify dust
emission responses at the regional scale.

*Position: PhD (2 positions)

*Location: Las Cruces, NM

*Who may apply: Applicants must have a strong academic record in ecology,
geomorphology, geography, environmental science, or a similar natural
resource related field, as well as the ability to effectively collaborate
and work independently. Preference will be given to applicants who have
strong quantitative skills and an enthusiasm for using big data to address
multi-disciplinary problems. The students are expected to work in
collaboration with PIs at the New Mexico State University Department of
Plant and Environmental Sciences, Department of Animal and Range Sciences,
USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range and Cardiff University, Wales.
Positions will be funded through graduate assistantships.
