lands & waters

Collins CO
Date: Monday, April 8, 2019
Time: 12:15 - 1:15 pm (Eastern)
Place: Rachel Carson Room (Basement Cafeteria of the Main Interior
Building, 1849 C St., NW, Washington, DC 20240)
Webcast: DOI Live Events (http://www.doi.gov/events)

What will you learn?

Place-based, long-term research networks, catalyzed by USGS and centered on
DOI lands, are critical for understanding how public lands work and how
best to manage them. Jill Baron will share four examples from the West: 1)
how diverse fire history and fire ecology research led by the New Mexico
Landscapes Field Station has been key to the acceptance of forest fuel
treatments (thinning & managed fire) by local publics and land management
partners (NPS, BLM, BIA, USFS) to reduce risks of future mega-fires and
protect vital ecosystem services ranging from water supplies to
biodiversity; 2) how studies of nitrogen deposition effects in Rocky
Mountain National Park by the Fort Collins Science Center led to
stakeholder management solutions that protect and restore ecosystems on
public lands while encouraging regional agriculture to thrive; 3) decades
of intensive forest health studies in the Sierra Nevada allowed rapid
response to California’s recent extreme drought, catalyzing collaborative
research to provide stakeholders with forest vulnerability maps to improve
forest resilience; and 4) how glacier monitoring in Mount Rainier National
Park is being applied to mitigate flood and landslide hazards to directly
protect visitor and worker safety.
