All,

The Plant Conservation Alliance would like to thank Dr. Jeannette Whitton
for her informative and thought provoking presentation "What are we doing
to recover plants at risk? A comparison of policies and progress under
Canada’s Species at Risk Act and the U.S. Endangered Species Act".
Information on the Whitton lab and Jeannette’s contact information can be
found here <https://www.botany.ubc.ca/people/jeannette-whitton>.

A few updates and announcements from the January 10th meeting:

· The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History has unveiled a
new botany lounge with an exhibit on the National Seed Strategy.
Information on this exhibit can be found here
<https://www.si.edu/exhibitions/the-garden-lounge-6215?width=85%25&height=85%25&iframe=true&destination=node/34386>
.

· Native Plant Demonstration Site Network: Survey
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdsh7XIK91uXKmHh2CbmQ36EBY2y3eNc22nIk13mz4EG_l9Lg/viewform?c=0&w=1>:
In order to achieve objectives set forth by the National Seed Strategy for
Rehabilitation and Restoration, please share details regarding the
demonstration of native plants at your organization. By filling out this
survey you are helping to connect land managers by facilitating the sharing
of best practice methods for the conversion of land into native displays.
The network will also be used to educate the public of the need for native
plant materials and where their use can be demonstrated.

· The National Seed Strategy Task Force on Training Tools is
soliciting information on all training tools used in the United States in
2017 – make sure yours are included by visiting the Plant Conservation
Alliance non-federal website <https://www.plantconservationalliance.org/>.

· If you are interested in presenting at a PCA meeting, or would
like to suggest future speakers, please send contact information to Leah
Prescott (lprescott at blm.gov) as we are continuously planning future
meetings.

January
23; 11 AM ET (1 hour): HARVESTING NATIVE SEED TO SUPPLY LANDSCAPE-SCALE
RESTORATION: EVALUATING RISKS AND SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES presented by Justin
Meissen, Research and Restoration Program Manager, University of Northern
Iowa, Tallgrass Prairie Center. Justin will discuss the results of a series
of studies that addressed sustainable seed harvest from native prairies.
Justin's presentation will illustrate how life history traits provide a
useful framework to address the risks of seed harvest. Justin will also
share best management practices and seed harvest regimes that can provide
sufficient seed supplies for restoration while preserving the health of
remnant tallgrass prairies.

· The Society for Range Management’s 71st Annual Meeting, Technical
Training and Trade Show will be held Jan. 28 to Feb. 2, 2018 at the Nugget
