[PCA] PCA Meeting Wed. January 10

Prescott, Leah lprescott at blm.gov
Wed Jan 3 10:29:07 CST 2018

*The next Plant Conservation Alliance meeting is on Wednesday, January 10th

from 2:00 - 4:00 pm ET.*

The PCA is excited to welcome Dr. Jeannette Whitton, Director of University
of British Columbia Herbarium, Canada's SARAH & COSEWIC to speak with us
about her
research from 2:00-3:00 pm ET, on January 10th. Dr. Whitton is a plant
evolutionary biologist with interests that span the areas of population
genetics, phylogenetics and speciation. Research in the Whitton lab takes a
variety of approaches from comparative to experimental, from the level of
populations, through the study of whole genera. Dr. Whitton's research
group studies multiple systems in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). Each
system possesses some shared and some unique characteristics that allows
her research to undertake complementary studies of specific processes. In
particular, the family holds many examples of polyploid asexual (agamic)
complexes, and numerous edaphic specialists that are a key focus of her
research program.

***If you are in the Washington, DC area and would like to attend this
meeting in person, please email Leah Prescott (lprescott at blm.gov
<http://blm.gov>) by COB Friday, January 5th***

Please note, our meeting will be held at a different facility this month
and it is important to RSVP by January 5th if you would like to attend.

*More about Dr. Jeannette Whitton*

Jeannette is an associate professor in the Biology Department at the
University of British Columbia, and her work focuses on plant molecular
systematics and evolution; the evolution of asexual polyploid complexes in
higher plants. In addition to working on these systems, Dr. Whitton is part
of a research collaboration led by Loren Rieseberg, with Keith Adams and
Sally Otto that aims to look for the genetic traits that may enhance a
species’ ability to become invasive. This project involves comparisons of
invasive and native populations of 5 species in the sunflower family. She
earned her bachelor's degree in Environmental Biology from McGill
University. She earned her Ph.D. at the University of Connecticut and
completed her postdoctoral training at Indiana University.
