*Job Title:* Restoration Ecologist

*Status:* Regular, full time
*Compensation:* $19- 22/hour, depending on experience (plus benefits)

The Institute for Applied Ecology (IAE) is a dynamic nonprofit organization
whose mission is to conserve native species and habitats through
restoration, research and education. Our Southwest Program works in New
Mexico and Arizona. We cultivate partnerships to facilitate large-scale,
regional conservation projects, develop ecologically appropriate sources of
native seed, provide native plant education and outreach, and conduct
on-the-ground habitat restoration and applied research.

The Southwest Program of the Institute for Applied Ecology (
www.appliedeco.org) seeks to hire a Restoration Ecologist with a diverse
skillset, including experience with restoration research, restoration
implementation, and conservation planning. This position is ideal for
someone looking for an opportunity to apply practical on-the-ground
restoration skills as well as professional research and strategy
development skills for rare/endemic plant species. The primary project is
focused in the Chihuahuan Desert of southwestern NM, but work areas also
include desert, wetland/riparian, and montane habitats in the Arizona New
Mexico Mountains and Arizona New Mexico Plateau ecoregions of NM.


*Duties of the Restoration Ecologist:*

1. Restoration Implementation:

   - Manage restoration planning and implementation on public and private
   land sites.
   - Provide contract and budget oversight and secure permits as needed.
   - Maintain restoration and management records and track progress.
   - Ensure successful completion of restoration treatments such as: woody
   species removal, erosion control, mowing or prescribed grazing,
   solarization, herbicide application, post-burn and biocrust treatments,
   installation of wildlife structures, and planting and seeding.
   - Supervise restoration contractors and work crews. Prepare contracts,
   hire, and schedule work. Oversee IAE field staff assistants.
   - Safely operate and maintain restoration equipment as needed.
   - Coordinate restoration treatments with partners, landowners, and
   regulators.
   - Coordinate plant materials acquisition and production as needed for
   projects.

2. Restoration Research:

   - Lead NM Department of Transportation dust mitigation and germplasm
   study to be installed in Lordsburg, NM
   - Literature research for species possessing desirable attributes. Work
   closely with Southwest Seed Partnership Coordinator to plan germplasm
   development with farmers.
   - Map project areas and treatments using GIS.
   - Conduct baseline and post treatment monitoring, data collection, and
   reporting
   - Supervise field assistants helping to collect data.
   - Maintain research database and coordinate statistical analyses with
   IAE Conservation Research Program Director
   - Qualitative monitoring including photo monitoring, plant establishment
   success, plant community composition, and overall site assessments.

3. Conservation Strategy Development for Rare Plant Species:

   - Literature research and consult with experts regarding species
   addressed in strategies
   - Prepare conservation strategies for New Mexico rare plants,
   incorporating mitigation recommendations
   - Work with stakeholders with diverse objectives, coordinating closely
   with NM Bureau of Land Management and NM State Forestry
   - Rare plant surveys and monitoring to support strategy development

Other:

   - Prepare grant proposals, newsletter articles, and publications
   - Organize and conduct tours, presentations, and workshops
   - Obtain and/or maintain a New Mexico pesticide applicator’s license
   - Out-of-town travel required as needed to complete work program and to
   attend meetings and conferences. Out of town travel frequent to
   southwestern New Mexico.


*Qualifications:*

   - Bachelor’s degree in botany, biology, wildlife, horticulture, ecology
   or related field with five years of post-degree experience or Master’s
   degree in one of the same areas with three years’ experience (preferred).
   - Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Experience
   managing and coordinating several projects simultaneously. Experience with
   contract development and oversight, project planning and implementation,
   budgeting, and permitting.
   - Positive attitude and excellent oral and written communication skills.
   Experience developing and maintaining relationships with partners and
   private landowners.
   - Experience preparing restoration, conservation, maintenance, and
   management plans.
   - Experience seeding or planting native species in restoration projects.
   Awareness of steps for native plant material development.
   - Experience with research and monitoring, including: research design
   and implementation, data collection, trouble shooting in the field, data
   management, analysis and reporting.
   - Plant identification skills. Familiarity with New Mexico’s native and
   nonnative plant species, rare plants (including cacti) and communities
   (preferred).
   - Experience or training working with endemic rare plants and their
   habitats. Awareness of threats to local rare plants (especially mining
   practices) and rare plant mitigation approaches.
   - Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word,
   Excel, PowerPoint) and ArcGIS (preferred).
   - Navigational and mapping skills using aerial photos, compass, and/or
   GIS unit.
   - Good physical condition. Ability to work long hours in adverse weather
   conditions (heat).
   - Ability to lift 80 pounds. Ability to hike up to 3 miles carrying a
   40-pound pack and work in a bent-over/kneeling/sitting position for long
   periods of time.
   - Familiarity with non-profits and a record of funded grant proposals is
   desirable.
   - Willingness to operate and receive training on the use of restoration
   equipment as needed.
   - Current U.S. driver’s license.
