ASSESSING FOREST SUSTAINABILITY IN THE TROPICAL ISLANDS OF THE UNITED STATES
Webinar date/time: November 8; 3:00-4:30 PM ET
Duration: 1.5 hour
What will you learn?
This webinar presents key findings from a soon-to-be published Forest
Service report entitled “Assessing Forest Sustainability in the Tropical
Islands of the United States.” The report uses the Montreal Process
Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management to assess forest
conditions in U.S. tropical islands in the Caribbean and Pacific across
ecological, social, and economic dimensions of forest sustainability.
Findings show that forest area in the U.S. tropics has been relatively
stable, but that the forests on the islands face a number of challenges to
sustainability. While some of these sustainability challenges are similar
to those faced by forests in the continental U.S., others are unique to the
tropics in general, or to specific regions or islands in particular.
