The US Forest Service is conducting outreach to gauge interest in a
position that will be advertised later this fall to work as part of the PNW
Restoration Services Team (RST), a small group of resource specialists
engaged in revegetation of disturbed sites on public lands in the Pacific
Northwest.

The position will be advertised as a Biological Scientist/Botanist (0401 or
0430 job series) at a grade level of GS-7 or GS-9.  The full-time,
temporary position (6-months/year, but up to 9 months in the first year)
will be centered out of the Dorena Genetic Resource Center in Cottage
Grove, Oregon.  The incumbent will be involved in a number of restoration
and revegetation projects located throughout Oregon and Washington, with
responsibilities for project planning, seed and plant collection,
seeding/planting, and monitoring.  A strong background in botany,
restoration ecology, horticulture, or soil science is required.  The
position requires extensive field work operating independently, or with
other RST members, contractors, and agency partners.

SPECIFICS:

The Region 6 Restoration Services Team (RST) is outreaching for a temporary
(6-month, but up to 9 months in first year) full time Biological
Scientist/Botanist in the GS-0401 or 0430 job series at a grade level of
9.  This position serves as an assistant to the acting Program Manager and
various project managers.  The position will be located at Dorena Genetic
Resource Center in Cottage Grove, Oregon.

The Position

Under the guidance of the acting Program Manager, the position will be
involved in, and responsible for, various aspects of restoration projects
located throughout Oregon and Washington, including project planning, seed
and plant collection, project implementation, and monitoring.  The person
must have a strong background in botany, restoration ecology, horticulture,
or soil science. The incumbent is expected to build strong and professional
relationships with Forest Service and non-Agency partners through meeting
and conference call participation. While not required, those with current
COR certification are encouraged to respond.

Although the position will be physically located at the Dorena Genetic
Resource Center, the incumbent will report directly to the acting Program
Manager located in Portland, Oregon.  The position requires extensive field
work operating independently, or with other RST members, contractors, and
other agency partners.  Office time may include project documentation and
report writing.  They will work in close coordination with other project
managers located in Oregon and Washington, and with nursery staff located
at Dorena to ensure success in meeting goals, targets and objectives for
the team. Extensive travel will be required for this position, usually
lodging in hotels.

Restoration Services Team

Restoration Services Team (RST) consists of USDA Forest Service employees
who are highly specialized in restoration of challenging sites including
wetlands, riparian areas, roadsides, powerline corridors, and other highly
disturbed sites.  The team utilizes native plant material collected on a
hyper-local level in their restoration efforts, and has expertise in
botany, soils, horticulture, pathology, silviculture, and genetics.  Core
team members are located in Portland, OR, Cle Elum, WA, and at the Dorena
Genetic Resource Center in Cottage Grove, OR, with adjunct members located
throughout Region 6.

The team works with a variety of federal, state, and local government
agencies throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana.

RST conducts all phases of restoration, from project design and planning,
seed and plant collection, plant growout, implementation, and project
monitoring.

About the Community

The community of Cottage Grove is located in the southern Willamette Valley
on Interstate 5 (I-5), the region's major north-south interstate highway,
20 miles south of Eugene.  It is a full-service community, with a
population of 9,700 people within the city limits but serves a surrounding
community of approximately 35,000 people.

Cottage Grove features a local growers market, art galleries, concerts in
the park, numerous neighborhood parks, including a 16-mile paved bicycle
trail into the mountains, festivals, a new high school and hospital, an
historic downtown with a series of public murals.  Two recreational lakes
are located within 10 minutes of downtown and ample forest scenery and
access is within 30 minutes on the Cottage Grove Ranger District, Umpqua
National Forest.

There are six elementary public schools (with four alternative schools),
one middle school, one high school, and several day-care facilities.
Within the commuting area (Eugene, Corvallis, Albany) there are five
colleges or universities.  Approximately 22 local physicians service the
community, including family practice, internal medicine, general surgery,
orthopedics, ophthalmology, dentology and orthodontics.  The Cottage Grove
Hospital provides ER services.  Eugene offers hospitals and additional
specialized medical services, and many cultural and social activities.
