Americans once moved away from forests. Now forests are moving away from
Americans
The Washington Post 22/02/17

A new study of satellite images taken over 10 years starting in 1990 shows
the rural forest canopy disappearing. Forest space disappeared from the
United States in such big chunks that the average distance from any point
in the nation to a forest increased by 14 percent, about a third of a mile.

Farther from forest: 'Eye-opening' study says rural US loses forests faster
than cities
Phys.org 22/02/17

Americans are spending their lives farther from forests than they did at
the end of the 20th century and, contrary to popular wisdom, the change is
more pronounced in rural areas than in urban settings.

How far to the next forest? A new way to measure deforestation
The New York Times 23/02/17

In a paper published in PLoS One on Wednesday, researchers at the State
University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry
calculated the average distance to the nearest forest from any point in the
continental United States in 1992 versus 2001. Between these years, they
found, distance to the nearest forest increased by one-third of a mile
