*Field Crew Leader*
P-CREW (Plumas Conservation, Restoration and Education in Watersheds) is
hiring a Field Crew Leader to lead high school crews for two sessions this
summer. P-CREW conducts restoration projects in areas burned by wildfires
in the Plumas National Forest while providing natural resource work and
educational experiences for urban and rural crewmembers.
*Position Description:*
The Field Crew Leader will be responsible for overseeing the restoration
and recreation activities of a diverse group of 12 urban and rural
teenagers throughout two five-week sessions, as well as supervising the
Assistant Field Leader when in the field. *The majority of this position is*
*field-based*, and the applicant will spend their summer camping with their
crew in front country and occasionally backcountry settings.
*Dates of Employment*
June 1, 2015 - August 28, 2015
*Compensation*
The Field Crew Leader will primarily be camping in the field with program
participants. The FCL will receive a weekly stipend of $750 and meals will
be provided during field work (10 out of 13 weeks).
*Responsibilities*
- Lead a group of 12 urban and rural youth during the five-week sessions
- Keep a diverse group of teenagers motivated and working as a cohesive
team throughout the five-week sessions
- Assist Forest Service and resource specialist staff in leading
restoration and post-burn rehabilitation activities
- Ensure safety of participants and proper use and maintenance of all
issued equipment and tools
- Provide Wilderness First Aid care as necessary and help coordinate and
implement an evacuation if necessary
- Teach crew members how to participate in outdoor recreation activities
including camping, backpacking, canoeing and climbing in a wilderness
setting
- Drive crews to and from Oakland, CA and fieldwork sites often on rough,
windy roads
- Supervise the Assistant Field Leader
- Assisting in the planning and implementation of outdoor recreation
activities
- Deliver mid and post-session evaluations of participants and Assistant
Field Leader using pre-developed metrics.
- Work long hours in a challenging mountain environment
- Live in the field with the crews; camping in remote front country and
backcountry areas.
*Qualifications*
- Four year degree in relevant field *(Outdoor Recreation/Leadership,
Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Environmental
Education, Ecology, etc.)*
- Experience working with and leading teenagers in outdoor and overnight
programs.
- Posses or be willing to obtain a current Wilderness First Aid
Certification (or higher) and CPR certification.
- Strong leadership skills, a positive attitude, the ability to motivate
crew members in adverse conditions, and a good sense of humor
- Ablity to hike at least 8 miles in rugged, mountain terrain at elevations
up to 10,000 ft. with a 40 lb. pack, tools and a smile
- At least 25 years old with a clean driving record
*Desired Qualifications:*
- At least two seasons of experience working as a crew leader, or
field-based educator for teenagers, comfortable with field/inquiry-based
teaching techniques.
- Experience facilitating team building initiatives and low-ropes course
elements
