STRENGTHENING EVIDENCE-BASED FOREST POLICY-MAKING.

Linking Forest Monitoring with National Forest Programmes This paper
proposes an approach to assist countries in ensuring that NFM planning more
strongly meets the needs and demands of forest-related national policy
processes. The approach is based on an understanding that there is a
multiplicity of issues and legitimate interests related to forests that
require multipurpose information systems.

MONARCH BUTTERFLY DOESN’T NEED SO MUCH HELP

The Washington Post 20/02/15

It’s true that monarch populations in eastern North America are down about
90 percent in the past 20 years — a serious decline. But the overwintering
population in Mexico still totals more than 30 million. Most insect
conservationists would be thrilled to record numbers even a tenth of that
for many rare species around the country.

The man who oversees the U.S. Forest Service was in Boise Thursday to
announce a new project aimed at reducing the damage caused by wildfire in
one of Idaho's national forests. But, organizers hope it will inspire
people around the state to work together to come up with solutions to make
our forests healthier, more productive, and safer from fire.

Improved land governance in Africa is the aim of a joint LPI/FAO programme
promoting the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible
Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of
National Food Security (VGGT) in African countries. (In English)
In a meeting convened in Algiers by FAO, forestry experts of the Middle
East and North Africa (MENA) region have underscored the need for better
forestry education to meet the difficult challenges for the sustainable
utilization of the scarce forestry resources of the region. (In French)
New NASA images have shown how tonnes of phosphorus contained in sand from
the Sahara region fertilize the luxuriant tropical forest of South America,
after being carried there by the wind for thousands of kilometres. (In
English, Spanish and French)
REDD+ schemes, put in place in the Congo Basin to reduce deforestation,
will need to be complemented by other innovative approaches to enhance the
financial value of concessions, according to a new study. The schemes are
reportedly not profitable enough yet to compete with the clearance of
forests for their replacement with cash crops to be sold abroad. (In
English and French)
In Peru, information about effective REDD+ schemes, appreciated abroad,
does not seem to be featured in the national press or make its way to a
broader national audience, a study says. (In English and Spanish)
This news and much more in this new edition of *Infosylva*.
